How To Spot A Beta Hero
There’s nothing better than picking up a romance novel and discovering that the hero is sweet and subtle. He has a charming smile, a tender heart, and a ready handkerchief for the coffee the heroine just spilled all over her dress when she turned the corner too quickly and ran into him. If he’s also wearing glasses and has a picture of his mom on his desk, chances are he’s a Beta Hero.
Characteristics of a Beta Romantic Hero:
Jobs a Beta Hero might have:
What a Beta Hero is NOT:
A Drama King
A brooding Bad Boy
I happen to love Beta Heroes. Just because they don’t exude male dominance from every pore doesn’t mean they aren’t masculine. Beta Heroes are the men who will answer a text right away and fix a kitchen sink. A Beta Hero will be content to kiss all night if that’s all the heroine is ready for and make breakfast for her in the morning.
Don’t underestimate the Beta Hero’s virility. Just because he isn’t taking what he wants doesn’t mean his lacking in desire. Beta Heroes are just as horny as their Alpha brothers. They just don’t lead with their erections. Beta Heroes make great lovers because they aren’t takers. They are givers. What’s not to love about a man who would rather give than receive?
Let’s talk about the package. No, not that package. I mean the whole package. Just because he’s Mr. Nice Guy doesn’t mean he isn’t built. Beta Heroes are hot! They are the professors with the elbow patches, the bookshop owners, the brother’s best friends. They wear suits and ties, police uniforms, and glasses (swoon!).
Five of my top-recommended Beta Romance Heroes in no particular order:
“Red” Morgan in Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert
Governor Russo in The Next Mr. Russo by Jana Aston
Prince Henry in Red, White, and Royal Blue by Casey McQuinton
Malkolm Slaine in Demon from the Dark by Kresley Cole
Peeta in The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
By now, you’ve probably figured out that I am a sucker for the shy, dependable, family loving Beta Hero. I’ve written a few of my own. My favorite is Keoni Makai, the legendary big-wave surfer in Try Easy. Keoni is a musician, a story-teller, and a hero.
Beta Heroes need love, too. They are often the ones passed over for the motorcycle gang leader or the billionaire boss. In their high school yearbooks, Beta Heroes were voted “Most Likely To End Up In The friend Zone.”
You can do your part to rescue the Beta Heroes from the bottom of the TBR pile. Read a Beta Hero today. And let me know what you thought of him.
